Re: Lions On The Loose

Post by Flutterby »

South African National Parks (SANParks) has received information that four male lions believed to have escaped from the Kruger National Park (KNP) last night, 9 July 2017 were spotted at Matsulu, a village outside the Park and would like to urge the residents to exercise extra caution.

“KNP Rangers and their counterparts at Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) are in the area searching for the lions and we will give details as soon as they have appraised us”, said KNP’s spokesperson, William Mabasa.

SANParks would like to reiterate that residents should be extra vigilant and report any sightings of these dangerous predators to the authorities on 080010111.

Further updates will follow until all the lions have been successfully captured.

JOHANNESBURG – There’s still no sign of the four lions which escaped from the Kruger National Park.

The wild cats were last seen on Sunday evening a few kilometres from the park.

SANParks say that it is still not clear how they escaped.

Spokesperson William Mabasa has urged members of the public no to approach the animals if they spot them.

“The lions' escape is not a security issue because it’s their pattern. Animals can escape anytime, especially around the Kruger National Park, looking at our fences and amount of rivers that are flowing into the park.”

This escaped animal thing is a conundrum...the law says it is MTPA's problem once they leave (the local Conservation authority). Generally they have simply been shot in the past, which happens quite frequently, and the community lately demand that they are shot, as with the elephants there over the past years, which are then eaten at magnificent pace!

This is fine for dangerous non-endangered animals, IMO?

A densely-populated area like this is not the spot to be darting lion, although they are currently obviously hiding out in the mountainous areas.

It also costs a lot of money and manpower to dart and relocate? -O-

Whooo, nana!

The fences there are in a dubious state, as far as I know (the border between Numbi and Croc River, basically). SP said today they are more for disease control regarding herbivores, and responsibility of Department of Veterinary affairs. Anyway, fences wont stop determined lions...those enclosed that I have seen need to be much higher and based in cement, preferably electrified? -O-
