SANParks Media replies - Please be Careful, SP!

Post by Richprins »

This has become a problem that is not being solved.

Whatever small things are going on, SANParks' dealings with the media, whether once-offs or official releases, remain to have a lot of room for improvement, and it is starting to become unforgivably shabby, to put it mildly.

The biggest case in point is the shambles regarding the responses to the late elephant that attacked a tourist vehicle almost exactly a year ago, in Kruger.

Lately, there have been 3 poor responses to incidents in Kruger, within the space of 2 weeks at most!

Firstly, the Orpen Gate "Ladies for Hire"..this may seem a laughing matter, but it is clear that SP responded with only the necessary level of truth, as the response changed once the story hit the press.

Secondly, the Sunset Dam draining fiasco... at first an official SP spokesperson said it was due to the destruction of waterholes, purely because the query came in at the time another release was sent out regarding the borehole destructions. The next response, still not an official one, was that the inlet pump's cables were broken. The story will still come up.

Thirdly, and worst of all, is the confusion regarding the death of a visitor killed by a crocodile at Skukuza Golf Club recently. The salient points revolve around whether the individual was being reckless, as in swimming in the dam, or having been innocently taken out amongst a group while next to the dam. Both versions remain in the various reports, yet the official SP media release still simply retains the second version, while one of the SP officials is quoted in both versions!

While people are mourning this tragedy, families and friends obviously want the right answers.... :-(

While locals may be able to get a handle on all of the above....these media answers remain the only source of information to most foreign visitors...?

In all the years that I have been visiting, there has never been ONE clear or honest answer to any of the many incidents from Sanparks, whatever the subject. It always make me think of the communist countries; first they say nothing, then if something comes out, they deny it. Little by little if prompted by the media or by the known facts they tell their version, which is never the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth 0*\

It also reminds me of the left hand not knowing what the right one is doing...

Not very professional.

Another one, now "corrected":

Snared cheetah rescued, released
2014-12-18 18:31

Dale Hes

(Christophe Beaudufe, AFP)

Mbombela - A cheetah which spent at least six weeks wandering around the Kruger National Park with a snare cutting into its neck, was captured, freed from the snare and released unharmed on Wednesday morning.

The cheetah was initially spotted by tourists close to the Crocodile River Bridge in the south of the park on 28 October.

Since then, rangers were trying to locate it.

“The rangers found her 25km north of the Tekwane picnic site. She was darted, treated with antibiotics and released safely back into the wild after it was assessed that she was healthy,” said SANParks spokesperson Reynold Thakuli.

Thakuli said that snares have always been a problem in the park.

“We find hundreds of snares in the KNP every year, mostly set by people living within the park’s boundaries who want some extra food, and the majority of animals aren’t as lucky as the cheetah. We encourage visitors to report snaring at the nearest camp, so we can respond as quickly as possible,” said Thakuli.

He thanked the tourists who reported the distressed cheetah.

“The fact that tourists are helping us means that we are not necessarily managing and protecting the park by ourselves, but together with our visitors, which is a great thing,” Thakuli said.

Not good enough, unless the agency misquoted Mr Thakhuli?

No, Lis...the correct reply was given under the "snared cheetah" thread! Not inside the Park! \O
