Join us on 2 September at 7pm as Derek van der Merwe the Limpopo Regional Coordinator of the Carnivore Conservation Programme, explains his personal journey into the trials and tribulations of the Waterberg Wild Dogs.

Wild Dogs are the most Endangered carnivore in South Africa, and a small population of free-roaming Wild Dogs is located within the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve in Limpopo Province. The Waterberg Wild Dog population has declined from 120 in 1998 to just five in 2017. Currently, there is only one known breeding pack of Wild Dogs still active in the Waterberg, using a multitude of different areas within the Biosphere Reserve. The dogs in this pack are the remnants of potentially the last genetically distinct population of Wild Dogs in the whole of South Africa, and the area is critical in connecting Wild Dog populations between Botswana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. As the last free-roaming pack of Wild Dogs in South Africa, and facing high levels of intolerance and threats, it is critically important to safeguard this pack from being persecuted and killed.

Join Yolan Friedmann, CEO of EWT as she talks to David Bristow about his new book Big Pharma, Dirty Lies, Busy Bees and Eco Activists, 20 Environmental Stories from South Africa.

They will unravel the environmental landscape of South Africa and talk about pesticides, poaching, petrol, plastics, population, pollination, pollution, pods, politics, pharmaceuticals, people, prophets, power, and poop.

Find out what industrially manufactured foods and large-scale farming are doing to us; how state capture has derailed our civil service and triggered sewerage spills, oil slicks and air pollution; who benefits most from health supplements; and what the real costs of generating power are, and what works best – coal, nuclear, fracking, solar or wind.

The book also showcases the good deeds of our eco heroes who bring water and hope to stricken towns; who farm regeneratively and sell us wholesome foods; who clean up other people’s messes; and individual superheroes who nurture their own back gardens. David’s book celebrates their achievements.

WIN on the night - one lucky guest will be going home with a copy of this book
