Hmmmm.... yeahh well , I've also seen that these socalled hunters say that they are " harvesting " the animals
But , to my mind , " harvesting " is something that you do over and over again from raising a crop , whatever that crop may be .
Chopping down the tree in order to " harvest " its fruit , is not sustainable , and certainly not going to give you a " harvest " next year .
In the case of lions , I suppose that you can indeed then also " raise " a number of animals , of which you " harvest " the excess . Now , I do not really think that at this time we really have " excess " lions running around in the wild . But , the opposite also appears true , in that in South Africa , there are an excess of around 8000 ( cage raised ) lions , but they are not allowed to be shot or " harvested " legally , unless they have run wild for at least 2 years ( please correct me if I am wrong here ) . If not , then it would be called " canned " hunting .
And I am quite convinced , that , despite the ban on " canned " lion-hunting , it still is a very general occurrence in this country .
My opinion .

"Canned hunting" is a different issue, I think!? Most hunters frown on it!
It doesn't do much for conserving large natural areas, either!

Canned hunting is one of the forms of " hunting " , and was something started by the " hunting " community themselves ; certainly not by conservationists
And it is true that many " hunters " frown on canned hunting .
But , we're going to come back to that .
( I love this subject )
Let's consider trophy hunting . Nowadays , we find many gamefarmers breeding odd and funny-coloured mutants , like copper Springboks , and black springbok , and golden Gemsbok , etc etc etc . And these animals fetch enormous prices at game auctions , the reasons for which are not clear , except that they have " split " genes , and so on . Suddenly every game farmer has become a geneticist
Now , I am not criticising the breeding of such odd animals . I am merely questioning what happens to them . After paying R26 million for a Buffalo bull , certainly the buyer does not let it loose to roam free on his 20 000 or 30 000 hectare game-farm . No , it is used for breeding more record sized buffs , to be sold at even higher prices . And eventually , we have 100 000 of these supersized buffs being admired by millions of people from all over the world ?
No , most of these offspring are shot by hunters , who all crave to see record size buffalo horns above there fireplaces .
But again , does the hunter go running around for days on end looking for that buffalo , or does he go to a certain ( small ) camp on the gamefarm , where he stands on the back of bakkie , with a high-powered rifle , with telescope , mounted on a tripod , and shoots the buffalo from a distance of 30 or 40 meters ?
If it is the latter , then I ask , is that not " canned " hunting ?
Of course , there is also the monetary side of it , the tax write-offs , etc , but that , is another discussion

Re: 78 000 want US lion hunter banned from SA
I think we need to go to the "hunting" topic, okie!
Lots of different issues!
The weird genetic blesbok/springbok etc. get added to a lifers list for hunters, which I think is ridiculous, but they are deadly serious about it!
Breeding bigger trophy animals is a different thing altogether, and can take decades!
It does become a bit of a peeing contest amongst the rich farmers, who don't really need the money, but it is really an exception to the normal PH industry, I think?

The hunter actually mentioned the European practice of placing a branchlet in the killed animal's mouth as a sign of respect, nana?

Where does one draw the line as to which species is acceptable to be killed?

I have to agree with okie and nan. Hunting for fun is abhorrent to me and certainly shows no respect for the animal.
