What is a "fly camp"?

Might be a small rustic mobile camp with tents or huts (perhaps only for some month)

There are "fly-camps" on the Okavango and Zambesi

Sanparks uses the term for the camps of the Wilderness trails:

Are all of these approved, or are they simply proposals at this point? I really doubt they would manage to accomplish more than 20% of the items on that list in the next four years!

Having said that, I am excited if the new tents / fly camps etc. are going to bring "budget" accommodation to areas of the park where they don't currently exist, such as Satara. The price of bungalows has, in my humble opinion, become totally ludicrous, considering all you get is a bathroom and in some cases a hotplate.

Yes, bruce, who knows?

Bungalow prices are ridiculous and unfair to us, the SA public, especially if one looks at maintenance standards! @#$

Also to foreigners, especially if you add the cost of the wildcard 0*\

Morning all, interesting topic re costs, I very much doubt the tented camps / flying camps are going to be more affordable, cheaper compared to the existing accommodation options. I studied the strategic plan this weekend and the costs allocated to the new developments ie new economy tents at lower sabie planned for the 2020/2021 financial year, budget is R 7,500,000 so to recover the capital expense cost within 5 years with no profit this amounts to R 4109.58 per day every day for 5 years and this excludes all utilities, salaries, insurances. Unfortunately there is no mention how many tents are planned for this development.

10 new tents are planned for Satara in the 2023/2024 financial year, budget allocation is R 5,000,000 - minimum need to recover capital expenditure costs only (no provision for repairs, maintenance, replacement) at R 2739.73 per day every day or R 274.00 per tent per day - again this is going to become a cash cow.

Another interesting point, the new development listed as Mkuhlu Tented Camp (planned for 2023/2024 financial year, value R 5,000,000) total 40 beds or 10 tents, 4 bed - is this in competition with the tender that was placed for Nkuhlu Tented Camp and if not, suddenly the beds increased from 15 beds as per the RFP released to 40 beds?

Also reading the document, seems like the provision is being made to add an additional 60 to 100 beds to the Lower Sabie pool (fly camp, economy tents, new camp site)
