Flavour of the Month May & June 2018- S126 Sweni Drive

Post by Dzombo »

This road in the central region stretches from the H1-3 in the East to the S36 junction in the West. With the Muzandzeni Picnic spot at this junction.

Can we include Shimangwaneni Dam, as it is part of the Sweni system, Dzombs?

That's quite far down the S36?
IMO the S36 is quite a long road and could prob be a topic on its own? -O-

I have only driven on this road once. - November 2016. I have read that Sable frequent the western end, so wanted to try and see some.

This was at the height of the drought, and the further west we drove, the worse condition the bush was in - looking like a nuclear wasteland.

Sightgings were sparse. A very emiciated Hippo in the Sweni Waterhole.
But we did have an amazing giraffe sighting. A herd of about 30 on both sides of the road.
But no Sable 0*\

Photos to follow.

I have added a map to Dzombo's first post. \O

I agree with Dzombo that the S36 should have it's own topic.

There is already a big piece of the S-36 on other topics like: viewtopic.php?f=263&t=5035

April 2016

While stopped someone told us about a pride of lions on the S126 Sweni road, which is the road we had planned on taking anyway.

At the turn-off we found a guy battling with a flat tyre so Mommo got out to help.

After looking in the boot he said he couldn't find the jack! 0*\ We were about to get ours out when the Kruger traffic police arrived. They were charming guys and couldn't have been more helpful. They told us not to worry and to leave it to them. ^Q^

Image

The lions had been seen at the waterhole not far from the main road but when we got there, there was a herd of wildebeest but no lions. We scanned the area and then saw an elephant approaching and thought if the lions were still around, the ellie might flush them out. As the ellie got closer a lion cub popped out from some thick bushes, and then disappeared again. :-0

Image

A lioness then appeared, looking in the direction of the wildebeest.

She then started towards them, moving with purpose.

We reversed back to the waterhole. The elephant had arrived and scared the wildebeest away who were now moving towards the lion!

We couldn't see the lioness anymore, so we moved forward again and saw that she had turned around and returned to where we had originally seen her. -O- You can just see her nose to the right of the cub.

As we were in no rush we found some shade and decided to wait around a while longer. In total we counted 4 lions but they never moved out into the open, so we decided to continue on our way to the S36 and back to the H7.
