Gardenia hide is actually over one of the bigger of many natural pans in that area, and before the bizarre wet cycle started, was intended to provide a magic "winter-long" experience for visitors once the adjacent Mlambane stream dried up, using tanker trucks to keep it going should it not last! :-)

A wounded one!

Not a snare? Snares normally lower down the neck?

\O

(You know the best way of scanning, imo, is to take a digital camera pic of the photo using the macro function? Almost faultless! \O )
No, not wounded. Just the qaulity of the scan. Thanks for the tip on scanning \O

The beautiful Jackalberry that splits the road into two. Sharifa and I always joke about finding a leopard in this tree one day.

The S119 is good for leopards and in fact all of the big 5.

There are river loops along this road where you can park off. The loop close to the jackalberry is a good spot to see white fronted bee-eaters that nest in the river bank.

While parked off in a river loop in April 2010 we saw a Black Rhino and calf across rhe river O/\

Great stuff, all! ^Q^ ^Q^ ^Q^

The hide can become a bit delapidated sometimes, and it is a favourite wee stop for lady tourists...the enclosed entry path, but what can one do? -O-

White RhinoTerritorial skirmish on S119. You will see in the video how one takes time out to do some territorial marking. Also look out for the fork tailed drongos catching the insects that are disturbed by the rhinos.

Seen plenty rhino on this road, but mostly only general game and the odd ellie or buffalo at the hide.

We have however found 4 male lion on a buffalo kill a few km from the hide, including 1 crazy male lion (last pic) who didn’t want anyone around, including a teenage ellie who wondered onto the scene
