Apparently, says Elize, there is a female ostrich hanging around the bridge area now, called Patricia, or Trish! She lost her husband a while ago and is now going through menopause or something, attacking tourist vehicles! lol

Very unusual location for ostrich! :shock:

Johan van der Walt, safarigids en fotograaf, waarsku loop lig skuins voor die Luvhuvhu-brug vir die volstruisweduwee Trish “wat nie al haar skapies in ‘n kraal het nie”.

Hoe wyd Johan van der Walt van Safarilink ook al gereis en hoeveel ervaringe hy ook al in die vreemde gehad het, was die deurwinterde reisiger nie voorbereid op 'n ontmoeting met die enigste volstruis in die 24 000ha Makuleke-konsessiegebied tussen die Luvuvhu- en Limpoporivier nie.

SKUKUZA – Die eerste keer wat welberese safarigids Johan van der Walt vir Trish, die alleenlopervolstruis van Pafuri gesien het, was net voor die brug oor die Luvuvhurivier in die Pafuri-streek van die Nasionale Krugerwildtuin (NKW). Sy was besig om stadig maar seker na sy motor aan te suiker.

Trish is ‘n vrou met ‘n verlede. Haar kêrel is drie jaar gelede deur leeus gevang. Sedertdien is sy die enigste volstruis aan die mees noorderpunt van die NKW met bitter min vooruitsigte om saam met ‘n maat oud te word.

“Toe sy ons sien, het die poppe letterlik begin dans. Sy het op ‘n drafstappie na ons toe gehardloop en skielik voor die motor gestop. Haar vere was papsopnat van die reën. En toe begin die vlerkdans in die pad met vere al draaiende en swaaiende. Die encore was ‘n ywerige geskud van vere. Toe staar sy stip na ons,” vertel Van der Walt.

Van der Walt is ‘n ywerige natuurfotograaf, veral van voëls, maar tydens die aanslag kon hy nie betyds sy kamera nadertrek nie en moes hy op sy selfoon staatmaak.

Hy is tans besig om ‘n boek oor sy ervaringe en ondervindings op reis en in die bos, asook in die NKW te voltooi. Hy was ook ‘n paar jaar ‘n senior lektor in toerisme aan die Universiteit van Pretoria, is ‘n ervare veldgids, en het ‘n onderneming, Safarilink wat safari’s organiseer.



Dis goed en wel as ‘n volstruis naderstaan, maar met ‘n seekoei wat fokus op jou kar, is dit ‘n heel ander saak.

Op dié reënerige dag was sy op haar beste. Sy het rondom die motor gedans totdat sy by die venster langs hom gekom het. Sy het aan die reënbespatte ruit gepik totdat sy haar punt gemaak het.

“Toe het sy vinnig aan die venster en dan weer aan haarself begin pik. Ek kon sien sy is gefrustreerd en vies. Ek het besluit om liewers die hasepad te kies.”

Die bittereinder wou nie sommer haar enigste geselskap in ‘n lang tyd so maklik laat loskom nie. Sy het die motor op ‘n stewige volstruisdraffie agternagesit.



Hy het egter gevoel hy moet ander Pafuri-besoekers waarsku. Gou het hy agter die kap van die byl gekom.Vele ander besoekers het al ‘n nagmerrie-ervaring of twee met die volstruis gehad.

Van der Walt moes ook hoor dat Trish die area soos ‘n koningin regeer en erg onvoorspelbaar is. “Klaarblyklik is daar mense wat haar voer. Sy assosieer karre nou glo met kos en raak kwaad as die venster nie oopglip met ‘n snoepery nie…”
