Cubitje Quap water hole is 9.6 km north of Nossob. The meaning of the name is a Khoekhoen for aardvark burrow. The water is fit for human consumption.

Mel,

Thanks. Strangely I haven't seen any aardvark in KTP yet, but I suppose the origin of the name must be true.

Great pics from Dewi Nan and Toko and my SO. \O Now where are the others with their pics -O-

Cubitje Quap may some-times appear very desolated, but most of the time you will see some-thing if you just stop for a while. My first memory of this water hole is of Kelkiewyn or Namaqua Sandgrouse flying in to get a drink of water. During our first visit we sat there for nearly 2 hours just listerning to the sandgrouse calling kelkiewyn kelkiewyn as they are flying down to catch some water and fly away again. Back at camp we were informed about a pride of lions that were at Kwang at the same time. Although we missed out on the cats I will never forget how nice and peaceful it was at Cubitje Quap.

Predators are often seen there from jackals, lanner falcon, cheetah and lions. One of our first kills at this waterhole was that of a lanner falcon that caught a dove. On several occasions we have spotted cheetah at the water hole, but never caught one drinking. Late afternoons one can be lucky to spot them, but that is usually very close to gate times and they are just waiting for you to leave.

Bateleurs are a another reason to spend some time at the waterhole and for us a bit of luck to spot lions, although you will not believe me. -O ;-) Last year we spotted a meerkat colony nearby and I am sure you will not find no gemsbok and wildebeest there during your visit.

Well let me grab some of SO pics to show what else you can see at the hole. 0/*

Now this is no meerkat. ^Q^ ^Q^ ^Q^

A KTP trip is never without its wildebeest sightings. This herd was staring at us just north of Cubitje Quap.
