Rhino Poaching Figures now Demanded

Lowvelder: Anti-poaching experts wants national statistics on rhino poaching released

Environmental organisations plans legal action against minister Edna Molewa, to release poaching statistics more regularly.

MBOMBELA – Unconfirmed figures suggest that more than 666 rhino have been poached since the beginning of the year.

The Department of Environmental Affairs used to release these figures twice a month, but now only does so on a quarterly basis.

onservation organisations are considering approaching the Constitutional Court to force the minister of the department, Ms Edna Molewa, to defend her stance against the Freedom of Information Act.
National poaching statistics were last released on May 10.

Molewa announced that more rhino had been poached in South Africa during the first quarter of 2015 than in the same period last year. “By the end of April 2015, the number we lost to poachers was 393 for the whole country.”

This represented an 18 per cent increase, according to Molewa. She added that 290 of the 393 had been poached in the Kruger National Park (KNP).

Environmental organisations like Oxpeckers, Outraged Citizens Against Poaching (Oscap), Save the Rhino and others said at the time that the statistics were wrong and that 157 more poaching incidents should be added to the statistics, to bring the national total to 550.

Molewa defended her decision to release the figures on a quarterly basis, by arguing that “criminals were also consumers of the information we release”. She castigated the media during the public briefing, saying it was “giving fodder to the organised criminal syndicates involved in the illegal wildlife trade”.

Director of Oscap, Ms Allison Thomson, said, “In the past we were able to get some information underhand, but this time around people are straightforward saying they are too scared to assist us. They have been threatened from very high up not to talk to the media. What I can announce here today is that our research shows that national statistics are standing currently on more than 666.”

Oscap and Africa Wild are considering approaching the court in an attempt to force Molewa’s department to communicate statistics more regularly. Spokesperson of Africa Wild, Mr Richard Prinsloo, told Lowvelder, “It is an absolute scandal that the minister is allowed and assumes that she has the right to withhold such important information.”

Thomson added, “We have identified our biggest problem in fighting the scourge of poaching. It is corruption and the lack of political will to work against poaching. We are all bashing our heads against the wall.“
Project Rhino KwaZulu-Natal released the figure of rhino poached in the province in Pietermaritzburg recently. It indicated that the number of rhino killed from January 1 to June 15, was almost the same as last year’s for the same period. According to the conservation group, KwaZulu-Natal lost 49 rhino, two up from 47 over the same period last year.
State-owned parks have been hardest hit this year, with a reported total of 41 being poached in these reserves, compared to 31 last year and eight on private land. Last year 16 were poached on private reserves.

The next update by the department is only expected in September.

At least some people have the courage to speak their mind! I do not think that the minister cares a lot, but on the other hand the more pressure the better \O

Reply received: May 2015

QUESTION NO. 1571 {NW1783E}

INTERNAL QUESTION PAPER NO. 11 of 2015

DATE OF PUBLICATION: 24 April 2015

Ms T Stander (DA) to ask the Minister of Environmental Affairs:

(1) With reference to her reply to question 1067 on 8 April 2015, what is her reasoning for not wanting to release these statistics on a weekly basis; and

(2) has the report on how the Government is performing in the implementation of the Integrated Approach in the fight against rhino poaching been finalised; if not, when does she expect it to be completed; if so, when will it be tabled in the National Assembly?

1571. THE MINISTER OF ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS REPLIES:

It is my view that we should communicate the release of the statistics as and when necessary in accordance with the Department’s work areas and schedules. At this stage it is envisaged the statistics will be released simultaneously with the report on anti poaching measures, in order to allow the Department time to focus on the actual implementation of actions aimed at curbing rhino poaching.
A report on the implementation of the strategic approach to rhino management was provided to the Portfolio Committee on Environmental Affairs in March 2015, and an updated report will also be provided to the selected committee as soon as the date has been agreed upon.

Poaching Stats Required - Please Tweet to Molewa

Government Moot on Rhino Poaching Stats 2015
July 20, 2015Wildlife & Endangered Species

After a media briefing in April of this year our count for Rhino’s was poached was close on 400. When asked for the latest stats Minister Edna Molewa said the delay in getting the latest statistics to the public was because “This is not deliberate, it is because of the heavy load of work that we have”.

It is now Mid-July 2015 and still no word, my gosh the minister and her department must truly be soooooo awfully busy that they cannot obviously do the jobs they were hired to do. Surely someone there has a calculator and actually knows how to use it to simply add up the Rhino’s poached in 2015 so far.

Tweet EDNA MOLEWA directly on her page here. (or add her to twitter @BEMolewa)
Tweet JACOB ZUMA Directly on his page here. (or add him to twitter @SAPresident)

Go to their twitter pages and send them direct messages with a link to this article. Use this shortlink to keep your tweet short. http://t.co/BfUjATlDdH

I’m guessing they just do not want to know or us to know because based on how it has increased exponentially over the last 7 years since Jacob Zuma came to power I am guessing this year is going to the worst on record. Minister Molewa probably already knows this and that’s why they are being so silent.

I guess time will tell or maybe the government will introduce a new law to keep those stats private from the public ?? Has Jacob Zuma officially put a gag order on Edna Molewa and her “Environmental” department ??

Go to their twitter pages and send them direct messages with a link to this article. Use this shortlink to keep your tweet short. http://t.co/BfUjATlDdH ask them why the Government Moot on Rhino Poaching Stats 2015 with a link to http://t.co/BfUjATlDdH

HOUND THEM FOR OUR RHINO STATS and TWEET IT EVERYONE IMPORTANT YOU KNOW.

Following yesterdays article :

Rhino Stats 2015 Govt Block Twitter Accounts
July 21, 2015Wildlife & Endangered Species

After the environment.co.za web site started created immense pressure with this article Government Moot on Rhino Poaching Stats 2015 and this article Rhino Poaching Timeline Statistics South Africa 2000-2015 and then pushing out masses of tweets and facebook posts to groups getting people to tweet and hassle them, our dear “Minister” Edna Molewa and our dear “President” Jacob “JZ” Zuma have decided to block our twitter accounts. We have also been very active on our anti-rhino poaching facebook group and have a lot of dedicated members helping us to achieve our goals.

We knew this would happen but it means one GOOD thing, we are bugging them immensely and annoying them so much that their only lame way of dealing with ignoring our requests for our latest Rhino Poaching Stat for 2015 has given them but ONE option and that it to block us on twitter. It’s so lame it’s actually hilarious because now we will step up our efforts and get thousands of others to tweet them and let’s see if they block the whole of South Africa from tweeting them. Gosh these idiots we employ in government really are so lame and childish.

Tweet Edna Molewa for Rhino Stat for 2015 – Rhino Stats 2015 Govt Block Twitter Accounts
So now we start the official onslaught against the Minister and President for releasing our Rhino Poaching Stats which they OWE to the public and they should be stats that are released monthly “every month” if not weekly. It takes a simple calculator and one or two staff members to assemble these stats but as the minister said “This is not deliberate, it is because of the heavy load of work that we have” …… utter bullshit if you ask us !!!

tweet-jacob-zuma-sa-president-rhino-stats
Tweet Jacob Zuma for our Rhino Stats for 2015 – Rhino Stats 2015 Govt Block Twitter Accounts
So come one South Africa, get tweeting, get onto facebook and get this out widespread and cause a storm so massive that they cannot ignore us anymore. Clearly our efforts thus far as working, no let’s ramp it up into a hurricane. It only takes a few minutes of your time everyday, so do it and don’t make excuses.

Edna Molewa’s Twitter Account is at this link …. her twitter handle is @BEMolewa

Jacob Zuma’s Twitter Account is at this link …. his twitter hand is @SAPresident

Copy and paste one of the simple messages below, go to their page, click “Tweet To”, simply paste the message and you are done. It will take only 10-15 seconds of your day. That’s not enough two puffs of a cigarette or a sip of coffee …. don’t make excuses YOU HAVE TIME FOR THIS.
