KNP guides appear in court
A Skukuza head guide and tour guide were arrested on charges of alleged possession of rhino horns on Thursday.

The two suspects, head guide Elliot Nkuna and tour guide Aubrey Mathebula, appeared in the Skukuza Periodical Court on Monday.

Skukuza police spokesman, WO Bossie Boshoff said it is alleged that the tour guides were taking guests on a walk when they came across a rhino carcass.

“After they found the carcass, instead of reporting to the section ranger, instead of reporting and left the park with them. The section ranger would have collected the carcass.
“The guests reported the incident. The police investigated and discovered the horns outside the park,” he explained.

SANParks spokesman, Ike Phaahla said the suspects were being held at Skukuza Police Station while the investigation continued.

“Their arrests are connected to the removal of horns from a dead rhino carcass and not handing them over to relevant officials for recording and safekeeping,”
he said.

The two were released on R20 000 bail each. The matter was postponed to August 7 for further investigation.

Kruger Park guides to appear in court after rhino horns disappear from carcass
2019-07-03 17:39
Buks Viljoen, Correspondent

Two Kruger National Park staff members are expected back in the Skukuza Magistrate's Court in August in connection with the theft of rhino horns.

Elliot Nkuna, the head of the tour guide team in Skukuza, and his colleague, Aubrey Mathebula, were arrested last Thursday after two horns taken from the carcass of a black rhino disappeared.

The animal apparently died of natural causes.

SANParks spokesperson Ike Phaahla said the two men had spotted the carcass in a dried-up stream, about 20km from Skukuza, while out on a guided walk with seven tourists.

The guides removed the horns from the carcass and put them in their backpack.

They apparently told the tourists - four from Argentina and three South Africans - that the horns would be handed to the senior game ranger in the Skukuza area for recording and safekeeping.

The tourists were questioned after a SANParks helicopter flew over the dried river bed and spotted the carcass. When the chief ranger in Skukuza sent a team to remove the horns, it was discovered that they were no longer there.

There were numerous footprints around the carcass, and it was suspected that tourists had been there first.

The authorities tracked the tourists down and got statements from them.

They also supplied photos they had taken, with a few showing the horns in the backpack of the guides.

Nkuna and Mathebula were then confronted with the evidence and they allegedly admitted to stealing the horns.

The horns could, however, not be traced.

Phaahla said the matter was reported to the police.

The two men appeared in court on Monday, where they were released on R20 000 bail each. They will be back in the dock on August 7.

Parliament - Environmental Affairs Minister Barbara Creecy says that a total of 376 people were arrested for rhino poaching between January 2018 and July 2019.

Creecy revealed this in a written response to a parliamentary question from DA MP Lorimer.

She said 366 people were arrested at the Kruger National Park, seven at Pilanesberg and three in other parks.

Creecy also said of those arrested, 15 were employed by the South African National Parks.

"Information on convictions should be obtained from the SAPS and National Prosecuting Authority," she said.

The minister also said 503 white rhinos were poached between April 2018 and July 2019.

A total of 472 were poached at Kruger National Park, one at Mokala National Park, two at Marakele National Park and 28 at Pilanesberg.

Creecy also said 35 black rhinos were poached during the same period with 32 at Kruger National Park and three others at Pilanesberg.

She said due to the persistent threat posed by rhino poaching, South Africa has developed and is implementing a holistic, integrated and multi-dimensional response involving various government departments and other stakeholders.

"The implementation of the 2014 integrated management plan combines the use of technology, extensive anti-poaching work as well as the management of the rhino population.

"This approach also involves collaboration across our borders to ensure that rhino pachiners are brought to book," Creeecy said.

"This approach has seen a moderate decline of 91 incidents from the same period last year," the minister said.

An employee of South African National Parks (SANParks) was arrested on Thursday for being in possession of abalone worth more than R300 000.

In a statement, Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel André Traut said members of Lingelethu West police station reacted on a tipoff from the community regarding the illegal possession of abalone early on Friday morning, and proceeded to a residence in Velani Crescent in C-Section where a 35-year-old man was arrested.

"The search at his premises led to the discovery of 936 units of abalone with an estimated value of R327 000," Traut said.

"The suspect, who is employed by SANParks, is expected to make a court appearance in Khayelitsha once he has been charged.
