Author Rob Little combines the science with the intrigue of a bird enthusiast in 'Birding in South Africa's National Parks'

Sarah Cohen reviews BIRDING IN SOUTH AFRICA’S NATIONAL PARKS by Rob Little, published by Jacana, R195

In Birding in South Africa’s National Parks, author Rob Little combines the science around our country’s birds with the intrigue that any bird enthusiast has.

Using a readable, interesting and informative approach, Little guides the reader through 19 national parks, grouped within the four biogeographic regions – northern, arid, frontier and Cape regions.

As you turn the pages, you will become familiar with the top 10 birds of each park and at the end you will find a user-friendly table of bird species commonly found in each park.

With more than 900 species of birds and over 300 species of mammals, South Africa is listed among the top 20 most mega-diverse countries on Earth, making a book with the focus on South Africa’s national parks that much more unique.

With a PhD on the behavioural ecology, management and use of the grey-winged francolin from the University of Cape Town, Little is an expert in his field.

His knowledge and research has been accompanied throughout the book with 82 photographs taken by expert bird guide, Maans Boysen.

Maans Booysen’s photography superbly illustrates this book and will leave you desperately wanting to see these birds with your own eyes.

“This book offers a compact and concise introduction to birding in our parks, giving valuable insights into what species can be expected to be found in each park along with helpful guidance as to which habitats they may be associated with,” San Parks Conservation Services managing executive Dr Luthando Dziba says.

As the first book dedicated to birding in South African parks, there is no doubt that it will be flying off of the shelves. In fact, you would have to be a Dodo not to buy a copy!
