My second (or third?) home: Föhr

Post by Mel »

Seeing that SO & I regularly visit our beloved island twice a year – once in summer and once just after Christmas and over New Year, I thought I might introduce you to this little gem in the North Sea, so that you get an idea where I spend my time when not on the forum. 0'

Föhr is in the north of German, quite close to the Danish border.

Image

The island lies in the Wadden Sea World Heritage and is 13 km long and 6.5 km broad and very flat like everything in northern Germany. Hence it’s an ideal place to be explored by bike when you don’t take the mostly stronger blowing wind out of the equation.

You get 10.000 inhabitants on the island most of which live in the delightful town of Wyk.

The Fehringer, how the people from the island like to refer to to themselves, are very proud of their untypical green island. Due to the fact that Föhr is sheltered by other islands around it, the climate is moderate compared to the mainland. Having said that, in 2010 we experienced a winter like never before. The North Sea was partly frozen which is an unusual phenomenon as it experiences a strong tides roughly 4 times within 24 hours (meaning ebb and flow two times each).

Good one Mel, I flew over the islands on my way to and from Copenhagen, wished I'd seen the maps before I went, I could have looked out for the one you stay at. More please. \O

Just like it there. We discovered the island some moons ago and were captivated right from the start.
It certainly has the bonus of offering everything that we could wish for for a one week break and it's
'only' a four hours drive plus a under an hour ferry ride away from us. O:V

It's not 100% certain, but it's believed that this Frisian ending means 'home'.

One word of warning though - I'm not good at taking pictures of houses and such.
Although there are some absolutely adorable residences (Note to myself: Take photos next time!).
