Making money out of photography

Post by Tataruka »

Hi all. 0/*

My hobby is photography and it has grown to be something more. I would like to know how much to charge a client for a photo? I've got a lot of offers, but have no idea what to ask for my services. Does anyone have some advice? I will not be printing the photo's but I will give them on a memory stick. And most likely be doing makeup and effects too. [O]

Anyone with advice can post it here or pm me.
Thank you
Jenine O0

Tataruka, my first word of advice...

If it is a stunning shot, sell prints only! \O

Please explain in more detail what the client wants. If they want you to do a shoot for them, charge them! If they want to buy a current pic, you must decide what it's worth, but try not to let them get the hi-res digital image. ;-)

Sometimes it’s not until you don’t see what you want to see, that you truly open your eyes.

what I'm going to do is start small and just do one person shoots of maybe couple shoots. I've already done something like that for fun. I just have no idea what to charge at all?

if it's for a wedding or something like that, you can count the hours... but I don't know your salary/hour :-?

good luck \O

Go to your local photo studio and ask how much they charge for portraits, weddings etc. That will give you an idea.

I agree with Sprocky, don't give away your high-res images, if they want something for their screen saver, give them smaller images.

Photographers never give away their negatives.

Good luck!

There is a major PHOTO EXPO going on this weekend until Sunday at the DOME in Randburg.

Maybe go and chat with some photographers \O

I have a friend who will be showing there, and I know that he very easily shares information... sure you will find more of them. ;-)
