Seven-year-old girl among those killed in N4 spiking incidents in Gauteng: MEC
Concerted law enforcement deployments aim to combat the crime trend

Naledi Shange Reporter
Road-spiking incidents have claimed the lives of three people along the N4 in Gauteng.

A seven-year-old girl is among three people who have lost their lives on the N4 because of the rising number of road-spiking incidents along that stretch of road.

Wandile Banyini died in a crash that occurred on the N4 near Pretoria in 2020. Leah Kwasha, 36, died in the same crash.

Two years earlier, Renald Lethaka, 27, had also died in a crash emanating from spiking.

Their names were revealed in a provincial legislature response given by community safety MEC Faith Mazibuko to questions posed by the DA.

Mazibuko’s responses revealed that the spiking incidents on the N4 have gone unabated for years, with a total of 141 cases having been reported in the past three years alone:

21 cases in the 2018/2019 financial year;
75 in the 2019/2020 financial year; and
45 incidents in the 2020/2021 financial year.

Between April and May, eight incidents of road spiking were reported.

Mazibuko revealed that only six arrests had been made in connection with the incidents, but none had resulted in convictions.

While three people had lost their lives in the incidents, many others had fallen victim to heinous crimes after the spiking incidents.

Mazibuko said these spiking incidents were often coupled with sexual assaults, robberies (at times armed robberies), assaults, malicious damage to property and attempted murder.

She said measures had been put in place to try to curb the problem:

More police officers, particularly from the flying squad, had been deployed to patrol the N4, R104 and R513 routes from 6pm to 6am;
Crime intelligence officers had been assigned to the cases; and
The department had spent more on media alerts in local newspapers and radio.

They had also requested the department of transport to intervene by providing more lighting on the roads.

The DA said the spiking incidents added to the woes of Gauteng motorists who were already endangered.

“Gauteng motorists already do not feel safe considering the increased rate of crime as revealed by the SAPS Gauteng crime statistics for the fourth quarter for the 2020/21 financial year. Car hijacking has increased from 2,290 cases in the 2019/20 financial year to 2,328 cases in the 2020/21 financial year,” the DA said in a statement.

“The pattern is the same with truck hijacking, with 144 cases in the previous financial year to 206 in the 2020/21 financial year.

“Driving at night is already a risky exercise for motorists due to no natural light, and they therefore do not deserve any further anxieties over possible spikes that could lead to them being victims of theft, hijackings or worse,” the party added.

N4 Kaapmuiden-Kaalrug project almost complete
The major upgrade between Kaapmuiden and Kaalrug in the Nkomazi region on the N4 Toll Route is expected to be complete by October 2021.

MALALANE – According to an update by Trans African Concessions (TRAC), the 15,5-kilometre road project, which includes upgrading the carriageway to four lanes and the rehabilitation of the existing road, is over 75% complete and the contractors on site are confident that it will be concluded over the next few months. Progress has also been made on TRAC’s three other major construction projects underway on the South African side of the N4 Toll Route.

According to TRAC’s engineering department, all three projects are on schedule for completion on the revised completion dates that were implemented following the 2020 Covid-19 national lockdown.

Other updates are on the Emalahleni-Middelburg road pavement rehabilitation, an upgrade which is 60% completed, with a completion date earmarked for March 2022. The major upgrade between Belfast and Machadodorp is progressing well and is 80% complete.

The new Karino interchange, valued at R390 million, is 70% complete.

Raubex Construction is responsible for implementing the project, which will see the existing intersection transformed into a grade-separated interchange, with on- and off-ramps and a bridge that will separate cross-traffic from through-traffic to ease traffic flow at the busy intersection.

Roadworks are moving steadily along and are scheduled for completion by November 2021.

Although TRAC endeavours to prevent traffic disruptions due to road construction, traffic flow may be affected in certain areas, at specific times and during peak traffic times. Therefore, TRAC urges road users to visit this website for regular, real-time updates that will assist them to plan their trips accordingly.

N4 roadworks persist despite Covid and Eloise
According to TRAC, the higher than usual rainfall this year caused unexpected delays.

MBOMBELA – Tropical Storm Eloise and the Covid-19 pandemic both had an impact on two important roadwork projects on the N4 between Mbombela and Komatipoort.

According to TRAC, the higher than usual rainfall this year caused unexpected delays.

“Covid-19 also contributed to delays as construction sites were shut during the first national lockdown in March 2020,” said the spokesperson for TRAC, Solange Soares.

“In addition, roadworks were interrupted a few times due to Covid infections on-site, which resulted in many team members being off sick and the rest of their team having to quarantine to limit contact and reduce the possibility of additional infections.”

According to Soares, there is currently a one-month delay on the Kaapmuiden to Kaalrug project.

TRAC anticipates these roadworks to be completed by the end of September and ancillary works by the end of October.

Soares said the completion of this project will be very beneficial to motorists using the N4.

“This 15.5km stretch of the carriageway is being upgraded to four lanes, undivided. This will improve the traffic flow on this section and is also in line with TRAC’s concession mandate. This portion of road is also being rehabilitated to ensure it remains on par with international standards, as is the case with the toll route.”

The new Karino Interchange is anticipated to be opened by the end of November, and final finishing work on it is expected to be done by the end of January.

This section of the N4 Toll Route has been synonymous with daily peak-hour traffic delays at the KMI Airport/Plaston Road/N4 intersection for years, following a notable growth of residential areas such as KaNyamazane and Karino.

According to Soares, the interchange will improve traffic flow onto and off the N4 Toll Route and enhance safety, as it will eliminate the need for pointsmen who currently manage the morning and afternoon traffic.

UPDATE from Nadine CPF.
2022-04-12 11h00: Nkomazi Critical Warning - Road Spiking and Attacks on N4
Road spiking incidents are increasingly recurring on the N4 within Nkomazi, specifically on either side of Hectorspruit, from Impala Siding to Komatipoort. This is in addition to the incidents that have been plaguing the immediate vicinity of the Lebombo border post.
A Mozambique-bound taxi was spiked just after 23h00 on Monday evening, 11 April 2022. The attack occurred between Hectorspruit and the Coopersdal junction. When the vehicle stopped, occupants were robbed. The driver was subsequently found hacked to death with a bushknife about 150m from the vehicle. Two passengers are still missing and being searched for in the bush and on farms next to the N4. A gang of approximately 20 attackers was reportedly involved, armed in various ways.
A Mozambique-bound undertaker was similarly stopped and robbed of all personal possessions, in the same area at around the same time.
SAPS Komatipoort have confirmed to community leaders that there have been increasing numbers of such attacks on the stretch of road nearing the Moz border. Not all targeted road users have reported the crimes, opting instead to share on social media.
Spiking incidents have occurred as far as Impala Station, about 7km east of Malelane but successful robberies have been centered around Hectorspruit. The stretch of road affected is almost 50km in length, which makes patrolling a challenge.
It is clear that there are multiple organised groups active along the N4 in the affected area. They operate at night. It is therefore highly dangerous to travel the N4 between Malelane and Komatipoort after dark. Avoid if possible.
Jointly released from Komatipoort and Malelane CPF
Warning!! If you are expecting visitors to Marloth for the weekend, please advice them not to drive on N4 at night time if possible. Last night. two cases of spiking reported.,
