Lion rescue!
One male lion reported next to a public road near the Kruger National Park. We had to react quickly and the only capture option that would provide an immediate solution was the unconventional difficult way of darting the lion from the helicopter. Usually lions are captured more passively by means of call ups and baiting at night. This method can take days, which we didn’t have in this particular case. We managed to dart the male lion in the thick vegetation, and successfully relocated him back to the Reserve where he came from across the road.
Another wonderful team effort done by a professional team. This very complex task was made to look easy 😃👏🏼🦁
A massive thanks to @rhinoconnect , @theaspinallfoundation and @wildlifeemergencyfund for funding the helicopter flying time!

They must be experts by now, with all the lions which have escaped lately ;-)

Lion on the loose! Feline escape puts North West on high alert

Park rangers and law enforcement officials alike are struggling to track down a missing lion, which is still roaming around North West.

Citizens in the North West province have been asked to exercise caution on Monday, after attempts to recapture an escaped lion near Sun City proved to be unsuccessful. The big cat has been on the loose since Saturday, and there are fears that local livestock are now in danger.

LION ON THE LOOSE IN NORTH WEST

A mauled goat has been found near where the lion is thought to have escaped from. However, this isn’t enough to help the experts properly track this feisty feline. Pilanesberg National Park ranger Steve Dell gave one of the least reassuring statements imaginable this morning, confirming there’s been ‘no sightings’ of the lion so far.
  • According to the wildlife buff, the escapee is doing a VERY good job of going undetected
“No further tracks or sightings have been reported of the escaped lion. We do not know where the lion came from in the first place as there are no direct tracks leaving the park.”

“We do not know where it went as no tracks were found of the escape route. Suffice to say it could be from Pilanesberg but we cannot assume until we investigate further. The search continues.”

AUTHORITIES STRUGGLING TO FIND FELINE ESCAPEE

North West’s local government structures believe the lion is currently in the Mahobieskraal region, near to Sun City. Plans and provisions are in place to locate the animal and bring it home safely. Those who do spot a lion where it shouldn’t be are advised to call SAPS immediately, so they can inform the park rangers.

  • “It is reported that the lion may be around the Mahobieskraal area, which is situated near the R556 road between Sun City and Ledig. A bait trap has also been set, in the hope that it will find its way toward it. Community members are therefore urged to exercise caution and be on the lookout for the lion.”

Two lions were darted and removed from the park on Friday evening, April 8. These lions have been part of a pride that has been roaming the park since November.
MTPA team coordinator Chris Hobkirk and Marloth Park resident and volunteer Mark de Beer.

There have been numerous sightings of them around the park. According to Chris Hobkirk of the MTPA, the lions were spotted eating on an ostrich carcase in front of a resident’s house on Thursday evening, but the opportunity to dart the lions was missed.

On the following day, Hobkirk coordinated his team and planned ahead by adding an impala carcase to the same area to ensure the lions’ return. As two lions returned to feast, the young male and female lions were darted.

“The young lions we tranquillised were close to four years old. There has been word that a total of five lions were spotted on Thursday, so we will wait for confirmation and be on the lookout for the others roaming in the park,” said Hobkirk.

The lions have been taken to a holding facility where they will be closely monitored and undergo veterinary checks under the supervision of the MTPA.

“We do not plan on euthanising them or releasing them back into the Kruger National Park – they will just repeat the process if we do.”

A leopard has also been spotted in the streets of the park more than once, but this was no surprise for the MTPA. Gerrie Camacho, its carnivore specialist, said leopards have been known to wander around for kilometres outside their territory.

“We still urge visitors and residents of Marloth Park to avoid doing outdoor activities close to dusk or during nighttime,” said Camacho.
