BIRDING IN AND AROUND DURBAN

- would anybody know where I can go birding around Pinetown, Westville, Durban - a 20-30km radius ...

I will be in this area this long weekend and would love to do some birding (while the others go swimming )

I am not a keen hiker, so I would look for places where I can drive my car -

What birds are quite common in the area - that is without mentioning the Indian Myna..

As you probably know Amoli, I’m no birder, but the Durban Botanical Gardens is an option. There’s Umgeni Bird Park, Mitchell Park in Berea area, but “caged” birds and there’s a bird park in Toti also with “free” birds, but very small.

You might also find some information and directions here .Some of these are a bit further that the 20km-30km .Can recommend the Bird of prey sanctuary .

Pigeon Valley Park in KZN is an absolute gem and should be a must for all Durban birders and those visiting the area. The highlight of my weekend visit was the Narina Trogon which was a great surprise. Among the other sightings was the Spotted Groundthrush, Black-throated Wattle-Eye, a number of different sunbirds, African and Red-Billed Firefinches, Thick-Billed Weavers, Cape and Chinspot Batis, Yellow-Rumped Tinkerbird, Brown-Hooded Kingfisher, Black Sparrowhawk - among others. Definitely worth a visit

If you don't want to drive around too much I would do as you say. Just make sure the Parlotones, etc aren't there. I suppose you could dance and bird together
