Operation Rhino was a successful operation, starting in 1960, which involved translocating a proportion of Umfolozi’s White rhinos to other protected areas. Spearheaded by Ian Player and Nick Steele, hundreds of White rhino were reintroduced into their former habitats throughout southern Africa, including the Kruger National Park.
In the early 1960s my dad was living and working in Zululand, and would occasionally bump into Nick Steele at the Empangeni Country Club. On one such occasion Mr Steele asked my dad if he would be interested in tagging along on a rhino capture as part of Operation Rhino. My dad jumped at the chance and took these slides of some of Kruger's first white rhinos.
The rangers would track the rhino on horseback and then force them in the direction they wanted them to go. The horses wore leather pads over their chests and front legs and the rangers wore helmets to protect them from the thornbush.
