Baobab Hill is just to the west of the H1-8 between Punda Maria Camp and the Pafuri area in the north of the Kruger Park.
Baobab Hill was a prominent landmark and stop of the Ivory Trail, used extensively by hunters and traders. Baobab Hill used to be an outspan or camp site (a plaque marks the spot) for migrant workers from Crooks’ Corner’s labour recruitment centre. Labour recruits would overnight there in the years 1919 to 1927 before being taken to the gold mines of the interior. Names of those travellers have been carved onto the trees. It was here that Cecil Barnard aka Bvekenya (once an ivory poacher, he eventually became a game ranger) established a permanent lion-proof kraal to protect his domestic stock.
