EWT Change a life today

Our youth is the future, and we are theirs. Without us making changes today, they may not have a tomorrow. Together, we bring more than hope to people and wildlife. This youth month, we are focusing on how we can, and do, improve the lives of our young people and secure their futures. Here is Michael’s story of hope and promise. His story of success.

Michael Sithagathaga was born and raised in the Soutpansberg mountains. From Khavhambe Village, a rural area with few stable job opportunities, Michael’s family struggled financially for many years. In April 2021, Michael joined the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) as a Junior Water Ranger and became a breadwinner for his family.

Michael wanted to become a ranger to protect the animals and plants precious to those living in the Soutpansberg. He wants to ensure that one day, his children can see the wonders of nature for themselves and reap its benefits. Since joining the Soutpansberg Protected Area Rangers, Michael has helped pay for repairs to his parents’ home and sent his younger brothers to school, giving them as many opportunities as possible. He has dedicated himself to learning various skills and has started a poultry, goat, and pig business with what remains of his income. Michael works extra hard to ensure that the benefits he and his family have gained from his employment are sustained – providing his family with some much-needed financial security. But Michael is going nowhere soon – he is as important to the Soutpansberg as it is to him. He is as important to us. Because Michael, and other conservationists like him, hold the promise of a brighter future in their hands. Support our rangers and youth everywhere who are committed to keeping alive what is most valuable – life.
