Thanks for your kind comments and taking your time to share them with me. Here's the last entry which I have adapted from a "philosophy" lecture I have always liked, to make it more family friendly....

Life's a Beach

At a family beach outing one day, the dad stood before his children and began filling the empty cooler box with beach balls. He then asked the kids if the cooler box was full. They all agreed that it was.

Then the mom gathered up some sea shells and poured them into the cooler, and shook it lightly. The shells rolled into the open areas between the beach balls. Mom then asked the kids again if the cooler was full. They agreed it was.

Mom and dad both began shoveling sand into the cooler. Of course, the sand filled up the remaining spaces in the cooler. They asked once more if it was now full. The children responded with an unanimous “yes.”

Finally, the parents produced a large beverage dispenser from under the umbrella and poured the entire contents into the cooler, effectively filling the space between the grains of sand.

“Kids,” said the dad, as the laughter subsided, “I want you to recognize that this cooler box represents your life. The beach balls are the important things - your family, your health, your friends, your pets, and your favorite passions – things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The sea shells are the other things that matter like your job, your house, your car.

The sand is everything else -the small stuff.

“If you put the sand into the cooler first,” he continued, “there is no room for the shells or the beach balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Attend to the things that are critical to your happiness. Spend meaningful time with your family. Pay attention to your physical and spiritual health. Spend quality time with your friends, whether human or animal.

There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. “Take care of the beach balls first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

One of the kids raised her hand and inquired what the beverage represented. Mom smiled. “I’m glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a glass of lemonade with a loved one.”
