Rhino mutilated to make poachers ‘invisible’

South African National parks (SANparks) spokesperson Reynold Thakhuli confirmed a white rhino and a black rhino, both adults were found poached in the Tshokwane Section of the KNP.
Both rhino were shot and four horns were removed, but in a gruesome unusual twist, the black rhino also had both his eyes removed.
Thakhuli said it is unusual to find poached rhino who have had their eyes removed, but the belief is that it gives poachers supernatural power.
“The belief is, if the eyes are removed, the poachers become invisible and won’t be found by authorities,” said Thakhuli.
He added that there are a numbers of strange methods used by poachers, mentioning that in a number of cases, poached rhino’s front feet were cut off.
“They cut the front feet off so if the rhino wakes up, it cannot move.”
SANparks authorities said the two rhino were poached sometime last week and were still trying to ascertain the exact date, but authorities were busy following leads as well as tracking the poachers’ footprints.
This brings the latest figures of rhino poached to 823 in 2014, with 533 of those from KNP.
In all, 251 rhino-poaching related arrests have been made this year, 10 of those, were allegedly part of a ruthless rhino poaching syndicate that slaughtered over 22 rhino during 2008-2009.
The syndicate faces 318 charges from poaching of rhino to racketeering.

5 KZN rhino killed in 2 days – report

iSimangaliso Wetland Park staff discovered a two-day-old carcass in the southern section of the Ozabeni Reserve with both of its horns removed, the Zululand Observer reports.
In the Kube Yeni Private Reserve near the Phinda Game Reserve, another carcass, also estimated to be about two days old, had been found with its horns removed.
A third white rhino was later found in the Double H Private Reserve. Yet again, the rhino was shot about two days ago and had both horns removed.
Another two white rhino were believed to have been killed in the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park in KZN this weekend. However, the Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal wildlife department could not immediately confirm the deaths.
Rhino poaching remains at a crisis level in the country.
At least 11 rhino were poached back in 2007, compared to 1 004 in 2013.
The Environmental Affairs Department reported that a total of 823 rhino had been killed since January 2014.
Meanwhile, about 251 people had been arrested in connection with crimes related to rhino poaching.

The idea is that rhino will be spread to safer locations, Lis...a gesture of hope in an emergency.

What is fact is that SANParks will make a lot of money.....as said, if it's an emergency, why not give the rhino away?
