20th August 2019

The Dogs first looked like they were going right, then split left..

Then an impala with one dog chasing came flying across the road (literally flying…) from the left towards the river.

Image

We followed as fast as possible but with 19 dogs running at the same speed as the car we had to be careful. Fortunately there was a dirt loop down to the river, and Teagy shouted “They’ve got one !”

One dog held the Impala while the others arrived, then it was chaos..

The impala was shredding in minutes and as the dogs had eaten they started returning back to feed the pups with fresh regurgitated meat.

Then the matriarch stopped , turned and came rushing at us with a lightning speed…. (the dog with the snip out of the ear)

She stood next to the car and sniffed the air and looked worried …

Then Cailin shrieked from the back of the car…..

Leopard !! O\/

There was a Leopard in the tree about 10 meters behind us, the dogs must have flushed it out while chasing the Impala..

Image

Image

The matriarch and a few other dogs approached the tree cautiously, it seemed that she had smelt the Leopard but not seen it.

Image

After about 10 minutes of back and forth under the tree, the dogs started to move off towards the pups.

Image

And the leopard climbed down

Image

Image

And tried to escape.

Image

The dogs picked up on this and came rushing back, the Leopard climbed the nearest fallen tree and the dogs surrounded it. The Leopard was hissing and the dogs chirping, this carried on for a few minutes.

Then the matriarch called the pack and they all disappeared into the bush, and the Leopard made its escape.

The Leopard was in the tree on the left and the dogs kill on the right

Now the Garmin was red and we may just make it to Malelane gate, but with some steady 40km/h we made it exactly at 18h00, with the guard waiting for us as the last car out.

Thanks to all that followed and commented on our Kruger holiday O\/ ^Q^

Wow, I knew about this sighting, but awesome to see pics of it unfolding, even the hippo crossing in the same frame as the dogs is a rare sighting, the rest is maybe once or twice in a lifetime type sighting as an entire package. O\/ O\/ O\/

I see Cailin is doing a brilliant job with your camera. ^Q^ ^Q^
