Activity Hubs

Post by Toko »

Activity Hubs – developing business in and around National Parks
• Activities in National Parks traditionally been limited
• Introduction of contemporary activities are seen as an exception more than the rule
• Parks do offer relaxation, connecting to nature and mostly self-drives
• However, there is a definite need to cater to the guests who are looking at optimising the visit to a National Park
• Objective of the Wild Activity Hubs (WAH’s):
- Located close to communities which will allow these communities to benefit
- Activity centres accessible to tourists
- Increases spent in National Parks and contributes to improved visitor experience
• SANParks received funding for the Planning Phase of:
 Phalaborwa Activity Hub
 Shangoni gate (Phase 1 New gate for high clearance vehicles with new camp site and picnic sites on Shingwedzi river) - Funding for Phase 2 with extended gate and tarred access with associated activities at hub to follow

New tented camp marked on the map -O-

A 'bird and reptile park' as part of this ridiculousness? WTF?

They have well and truly lost the plot!

I posted on the SP forum this morning:

Someone please tell me this is a hoax and is not actually going to happen inside Kruger.

For crying out loud, a 'Bird and Reptile Park' as part of these plans? So, captive animals inside Kruger, then? Is this what people pay conservation fees for?

I'm fecking steamed!

However, there is a definite need to cater to the guests who are looking at optimising the visit to a National Park
Who determined that need, I wonder... 0'

Considering the fact that those WAHs are to bring revenue it means they must cost money. So, people will have to pay for being educated.
I don't see how this is going to happened with the majority since famillies with several children will think twice about the expenditure.
(They're probably happy enough that they managed to save money to realise a trip to Kruger in the first place...)
Then there are the adults who got the means of paying, but might be too ignorant and think they know it all anyway. Then there are those
hardcore bushlovers who really know it all anyway. And who's left? A small group of visitors who would probably make use of such a facitilit
but I don't see them making up for the expenses SP will have with their activities, let alone raise a surplus.

But it all boils down to the fact that Kruger is becoming more and more like a zoo and a Disneyland in one. And looking at the reasons
given on the other side, I start wondering what happens to all the income of Kruger if conservation fees and income from accommodation
and all sort of existing activities can't fill the void. - I know the anti-poaching costs a lot of money, but there is a lot of support from commercial
enterprises as well as the average person in form of donations, that I wouldn't buy that argument if it was voiced... I also know that just a few
parks have to create enough income to support all others, but it was specifically said that Kruger has to create 85% of its operation cost and I
would like to think that that is happening?

God put me on earth to accomplish a certain amount of things. Right now I'm so far behind that I'll never die.

The thing is, if it is such a glorious project, why has it not been sung from the rooftops by SP since its inception many years ago? :-?

It will create jobs, or at least promises, along with other projects just before the local elections, maybe? -O-

I often wonder how much money Sanparks has received towards the anti-poaching efforts? It must be quite a lot + helicopter, dogs etc. I have never seen a sum anywhere.
Does this money show anywhere in the accounts of Sanparks?

Almost all of us have paid something in one way or another  And all the anti-poaching organisations collecting money? Some of it must surely have arrived at Sanparks.

I, too, would like to see a breakdown of where conservation money is spent. :-?

Accommodation money as well, but it doesn't take a genius to see that very little of that money goes to maintenance!

Back to the 'optimising' the visit bit, my wife and I 'optimised' our visit to a guest farm in the Karoo last year by sitting on the stoep every day for four days, doing absolutely nothing. :-)
