Two Rhinos!

This really was a trip for seeing hyenas Lis - I think we saw them literally every day and normally both morning and evening

We didn't do too much of the S1 RP... and from Skukuza not very far away

Thanks Pumbaa - we didn't see so many ground hornbills this trip so they were nice to find

Saturday July 17th

It was our last full day in the park. We started out down towards the H12 bridge and enjoyed a spectacular sunrise with coffee & rusks



We drove the starting section of the S30 but there really wasn’t much happening so we turned around and continued down the H4-1. It turned into a bit of a birding morning with first a brown hooded kingfisher, and then some little bee-eaters







Approaching sunset dam a battered hyena wandered past, and there was the usual array of species at the dam.





It was still early, so we continued south to try out the S28/S137/S30 before heading back to Lower Sabie. There had been a lion kill along the S137 the day before so a few vultures were still hanging around



There was also a very mangy-looking jackal



Near Duke waterhole there was a big herd of buffalo - we figured it might have been the same huge herd we had seen a few days previously. Other than that it was a quiet trip back round to Lower Sabie.

Thanks Pumbaa - I'm always keen to see the bee eaters in Kruger with their stunning colours

Definitely battered scavengers... coffee in travel mugs was our daily plan

Saturday July 17th contd

We stopped in at Lower Sabie for a break and then continued on our way back up the H4-1 towards Skukuza. A few km past sunset dam we were fortunate to find a pride of lion walk one by one out across the sand towards the river







When all the adults had wandered out over the sand this cute youngster came bounding along at the rear







We continued north and just before the Lubyelubye bridge we found this old chap parking off in the sunshine





We sat by him for quite a while with no other cars around. Although he was only 5m from the road, he was only really visible from one gap through the bushes. When others did finally arrive we explained the situation and everyone was very good at sharing the sighting by rotating chances to see him.

A few km before the S79 there was a line-up of cars. There were more lion in the bushes, but they weren’t very easy to see so we figured we would try get past the traffic. Just as we did so, the lions started moving



As luck would have it we were now past most of the cars and the lions were walking in our direction, so as they walked along the road we stopped every so often to get pics of them walking towards us before continuing further along to repeat the trick. Quite a few other cars were doing the same thing, whilst others were content to drive in a procession behind the cats.

Or you are cheating, which I exclude, because I think that you are a very honest and correct person, or you must be one of the luckiest ones going to the parks
