Vehicle choice - Kruger

Post by Dzombo »

When we (2x adults 2x kids) go to Kruger, I usually hire a Fortuner.

For my trip in September, it will be just myself and my son.
I thought a Fortuner was a bit big (and exp) for just the 2 of us. So I have pre-booked a Toyota Rav 4 through Avis.
My thinking - high ground clearance, auto (manual drives me nuts in a game reserve), and a decent sized engine for the motorway there and back.

Anyone have any thoughts?
Good choice? Or other better options?

An area of concern though is I think some of the newer Toyota models don't have a spare, but rather one of those repair kits.
Hopefully I would never need it. But I guess there are Avis branches all over SA

Ground clearance is not really an issue , you need to be able to see more than just the impala's belly buttons when they are standing in the road next to you . In the RAV you are seated about 1 meter lower than the Landy , so if grass is high ..............

okie - not sure if Avis do Landrover. Don't think so. The Fortuna is a similar size, but as I say, for the 2 of us is a bit too big and I can't really justify the cost.

Flutterby - yup I think it will be the next best option.

Ja, Dzombs..there is a thread here: https://www.africawild-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=242&t=7604

Cost is the only factor, really, dunno if you have to pay all your own petrol, as that is a major factor in SA! 0*\

September will be dry, so not the end of the world for viewing.

So various options!

Richprins,
Thanks for that link. I will have a look.

I have just been to fill up my SO car for her. £1.23 (over R20) per litre.
It's costing me a fortune to fly to SA and car hire etc. I want to make the most of my trip. Not going to worry too much about the cost of fuel. But I do appreciate it is expensive for you

Yup, the grass shouldn't be too tall in September.

I have a Jeep Compass which is probably the same height as a Rav and never had problems seeing over the grass. \O

Over half our petrol price is used to sponsor government theft, Dzombs...they even sold our strategic oil reserve, or tried to! lol

It will get cheaper one day! ;-)
