Kruger Park buffalo blamed for Limpopo foot and mouth outbreak
2015-12-15 14:33

Sharon Hammond, News24 Correspondent

Polokwane - Buffalo from the Kruger National Park are believed to be responsible for an outbreak of foot and mouth disease amongst cattle in Limpopo.

National agriculture spokesperson Bomikazi Molapo assured, however, that the infection was contained within the protection zone, where vaccinations were routinely conducted, and that it would not affect exports.

"We would like to urge the farming community in the affected area to work closely with our provincial veterinary officials and no cattle should be move out of this area," he said.

State vets detected the outbreak in the Matiane community in the Vhembe area near the Kruger National Park on December 8.

On December 10, laboratory tests confirmed the outbreak and identified the specific strain of the virus as being SAT 3.

"The current drought situation has increased possible contact between cattle and buffaloes due to limited grazing and water sources," Molapo explained.

Surveillance in the affected area had been increased and control measures implemented.

Control measures included the quarantine of affected cattle, managing the movement of cloven-hoofed animals in the surrounding areas, and vaccinating the animals.

Foot and mouth disease spreads easily among cloven-hoofed animals and can lead to lameness and even death.

People can be infected with the disease through skin wounds, or the mucous membranes in the mouth, handling diseased stock, handling the virus in the laboratory, or by drinking infected milk, but not by eating meat from infected animals.

The disease is not fatal in humans.

Foot and mouth disease re-appears

Tuesday 8 January 2019 - 5:22pm

LIMPOPO- Food producers in Limpopo have been dealt a blow as foot and mouth disease re-appears.

The Department of Agriculture has quarantined an area in Vhembe following positive laboratory results for foot and mouth disease in cattle in the district.

While the extent of the outbreak is not yet known, Limpopo's Department of Veterinary Services has confirmed that it's conducting further investigations to verify the results.

The matter was reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health.

The organisation has since suspended South Africa’s status of being foot and mouth free.

Zim bans livestock imports, products from SA after foot and mouth outbreak

The Zimbabwean Government, through the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Water, Climate and Rural Resettlement has with immediate effect suspended all imports from South Africa of live cloven-hooved animals and their products following an outbreak of Food and Mouth Disease (FMD).

In a statement released by the Ministry of Agriculture on Thursday, the southern African country said the suspension has been taken following an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) affecting the non-vaccination disease free zone in the Limpopo Province, reported on January 7, this year.

"The control of foot and mouth disease involves implementation of trade restrictions. Consequently, all imports that had been issued before 09/01/2019 and not used are hereby cancelled,” reads the statement.

“In line with the Animal Health Act CAP 10:01, the issuance of permits is a mandatory requirement for the importation of all animal products. Any import application will now be considered on a case by case basis depending on the risk.”

The Ministry said the Department of Veterinary Service will continue to monitor the situation, in view of progress to be made in the control of the outbreak.

The highly contagious foot and mouth disease, which poses a threat to the livestock industry was detected in the Vhembe District of Limpopo, which borders Zimbabwe.

In a statement the South African Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said, the affected areas are under quarantine and investigations to verify the results and determine the extent of the outbreak are being conducted.

Beef exports to resume after foot and mouth outbreak

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa has started to resume exports of red meat and related products after an outbreak of the highly contagious foot and mouth disease (FMD) in January halted trade, the agriculture department said on Thursday.

The viral disease, which causes lesions and lameness in cattle and sheep, was detected in a northern district of Limpopo province, resulting in the World Organisation for Animal Health temporarily suspending South Africa's FMD-free status.

Required veterinary health certificates have been issued for beef exports to resume to countries including Mozambique, Lesotho, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, the department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said in a statement.

Exports of dairy products have also largely been restored as well as trade in FMD-free pork to countries including Lesotho and the Seychelles, it said.

"Some markets for the export of hides, skins and wool are still affected and negotiations are taking place in particular where products have been processed to ensure the destruction of the FMD virus," the department said.

Exports to China of red meat, pork and wool products continue to be suspended but the South African agriculture ministry said it was in talks with China to resume trade.

The affected area has been under quarantine and no new cases of FMD have been detected, the department said.

Foot and mouth disease does not affect people but poses a threat to cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, goats and sheep.
