ACCESS FOR KNP DAY VISITORS DURING THE EASTER WEEKEND

Visitor management is a vital part of ensuring the best possible experience for all visitors to the Kruger National Park over the coming long weekend starting on Thursday, 29 March until Monday, 2 April 2018.
With this in mind, South African National Parks (SANParks) would like to remind Day Visitors to the Kruger National Park (KNP) that daily quotas will once again apply at the entrance gates.
Visitors are urged to make pre-bookings for their visits prior to their arrival and there are three time slots which they can choose from as follows:

The times slots below will apply from 29 to 31 March 2018:

o Time slot 1: 05:30 to 07:30
o Time slot 2: 07:30 to 09:30
o Time slot 3: 09:30 onwards

The times slots below will apply as from 1 April 2018 onwards
o Time slot 1: 06.00 to 08:00
o Time slot 2: 08:00 to 10:00
o Time slot 3: 10:00 onwards

“For busy periods such as the school holidays and long weekends, we aim to optimally manage the volumes that we expect, as well as our visitors’ expectations. The three different time slots are aimed at improving the spread of vehicles and, as far as possible prevent unnecessary waiting periods at gates”, said the KNP’s GM: Communications and Marketing, William Mabasa.

The Day Visitor Quota for the Park is a management tool to prevent overcrowding the roads and facilities and is applied throughout the year although we mostly reach carrying capacity during long weekends and school holidays resulting in us having to turns visitors away. Visitors will be able to book up to 80% of Day Visitor Quota per gate via SANParks Reservations offices and online at www.sanparks.org.

Pre-booked day visitors will get preference over non-booked day visitors at the gate but must ensure that they arrive within their booked time slots. Arriving outside the booked time slot, will be regarded as non-booked and therefore will not receive preference and could be turned away. These bookings can be changed as well through SANParks Reservations offices if need be.

Mabasa also reminded visitors to read the permit which they receive at the gates because all the rules and regulations of the park are clearly stipulated on these documents. “Day visitors may not bring liquor as a result of the alcohol ban in public areas of the Park. Further, visitors must please also refrain from committing other infringements such as littering, speeding and alighting from vehicles in places where this is prohibited in the Park. These and other Park rules are emphasized to ensure visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience, while not impacting other visitors, and hence must be adhered to at all times whilst in the Park;” he advised.

Visitors can report any rules and regulations infringement which they witness to the Emergency Call Centre numbers 013 735 4064/013 735 0197/076 801 9679. It is however important that the following information is provided:
• Vehicle type and colour
• Vehicle registration
• Date and Time of Incident
• Yellow SATSA sticker number (for Open Safari Vehicles)
• Details of Incident
• Photographic evidence
• Location of Incident

“We also advise guests to exercise caution when driving around areas undergoing major construction such as Skukuza Camp so as to avoid unnecessary accidents”, concluded Mabasa.

Visitors should also take note of the following important information:

• Day Visitor pre- bookings are subject to a non-refundable booking fee of R40 per adult and R20 per child until 31 March 2018 and R41 per adult and R21 per child from 1 April 2018 onwards.

• Day Visitors who have pre-booked will still be required to pay Conservation Fees or use a valid Wild Card to enter the Park. The Conservation Fee for SA residents is R82 per adult and R41 per child (between ages 2 – 11) and for international guests it is R328 per adult and R164 per child until 31 March 2018 and R83, R42, R331 and R166 respectively from 1 April 2018 onwards.

• Guests planning to use Wild Cards are requested to ensure membership is valid before arrival and this can best be done online at www.sanparks.org/wild
• The number and profile of persons (adults and children) on the reservation and actual persons arriving should correspond.
• All guests (drivers and passengers) will be required to identify themselves upon admission (by producing a South African driver’s license, identity document or passport); please ensure you are in possession of one of these documents and have them ready.
• Due to existing contractual arrangements with Open Safari Vehicles (OSVs), they have paid for the annual operating permit and are authorised to enter 15 minutes before Gate opening time to ensure fair distribution/flow of traffic.
• Gate Quotas will be strictly applied and guests without pre-bookings could be denied entry.
• Guests are encouraged to continuously provide feedback on their experience to customercare@sanparks.org

Experienced the non standard application of the pre-booked day visits system at the Kruger gates this season . Our first early full day trip in we checked online and saw Crocodile bridge was fully pre-booked .As we know the way Croc bridge works is only pre-booked get served first then they handle the rest(about 1 and half hours later) even if you arrived first at the gate .We therefore decided to pre-booked for Malalane gate and left early for the gate arriving just after 5 and about 40 cars back and waited for the HR to split the queues as they do at Crocodile bridge but that did not happen instead they handle the queue as I initially though the pre-booking system should work first come first served until the quota is met then only pre-booked visitors get preference .Was really impressed and in the end did all our early morning entries at Malelane as Croc Bridge is fully booked every day and works the other way around . Other items of note Crocodile bridge entry later in the day was the slowest service ever experienced in a decade (we assume there is some go slow on but it may just be Africa time),the HR on our first afternoon visit to Croc bridge was downright rude to another visitor who was clearly a first time visitor querying how the system works , on every visit to Croc Bridge it took on average 5-10 minutes per car even arriving late afternoon in a queue of 3 cars took 30 minute to clear the (only one gate open) gate and every car had wild cards . Security at Malelane is 100% was really impressed with searches in and out and was even asked to clear the car for a few of the searches .Crocodile bridge was definitely not anywhere close to that throughout we saw a number of cars that had probably gone out to town and returned just waved through without a glance and they all had Mozambique and other number-plates :no:

My son had his clothes bag stolen out of the boot at Malelane during 'the exit search' 5 years ago..They promised to replay the video to trap the perpetrators ..That never happened as the Security Video 'Wasnt working at the search point that day'!!

The Kruger National Park Management (KNP) is urging visitors to be aware of gate quotas that will be in effect this coming Easter long weekend. This is done to ensure that all guests have an amazing experience during their visit to the Park. To ensure effective visitor management, Day Visitors are urged to make pre-bookings for their visits prior to their arrival. There are three time slots form which they can choose:

Time slot 1: 06.00 to 08:00
Time slot 2: 08:00 to 10:00
Time slot 3: 10:00 onwards

“Easter holidays are one of our busiest periods especially for day visitors, we, therefore, aim to better manage the expected volumes so we can also cater to our visitors’ expectations as well. Day Visitors who have pre-booked will still be required to pay Conservation Fees or use a valid Wild Card to enter the Park. The Conservation Fee for SA residents as well as Zimbabwe and Mocambique nationals (passport required to prove this) is R93 per adult and R47 per child (between ages 2 – 11). For nationals of Eswatini (previously Swaziland) and other SADC countries, the conservation fees are R186 per adult and R93 per child. For all other guests, the standard conservation fees of R372 for adults and R186 for children applies
Guests planning to use Wild Cards are requested to ensure the membership is valid before arrival and this can best be done online at www.sanparks.org/wild_new/.
The number and profile of persons (adults and children) on the reservation and actual persons arriving should correspond.
All guests (drivers and passengers) will be required to identify themselves upon admission (by producing a South African driver’s license, identity document or passport); please ensure you are in possession of one of these documents and have them ready.

Day visitors at KNP’s access during the festive season
Daily quotas will once again apply at the Kruger National Park entrance gates.

“Visitor management is a vital part of ensuring the best possible experience for all visitors to the Kruger National Park (KNP) over the coming festive season starting on Friday, December 13 until Tuesday, January 14, 2020,” confirmed Ike Phaahla, GM of communications at KNP.

Phaahla urged visitors to make pre-bookings for their visits prior to their arrival.

”There are three time slots that day visitors can choose from.”

These are:

Time slot 1: 05:30 to 07:30
Time slot 2: 07:30 to 09:30
Time slot 3: 09:30 onwards

According to SANParks, the quota system for day visitors is a management tool to prevent overcrowding the roads and facilities. This is applied throughout the year although the park mostly reach carrying capacity during long weekends and school holidays, resulting in visitors being turned away.


Visitors will be able to book up to 80% of the daily quota per gate via SANParks Reservations offices.

Phaahla warned that pre-booked day visitors will get preference over non-booked day visitors at the gate. “But they must ensure that they arrive within their booked time slots. Arriving outside the booked time slot, will be regarded as non-booked and therefore will not receive preference and could be turned away.”

These bookings can be changed as well through SANParks Reservations offices if need be.

Phaala also reminded visitors to read the permit received at the gates as all the rules and regulations of the park are clearly stipulated on these documents.

“Day visitors may not bring liquor as a result of the alcohol ban in public areas of the park. Further, visitors must please also refrain from committing other infringements such as littering, feeding of animals, speeding and alighting from vehicles in places where this is prohibited.”

Visitor Management vehicles will also be on patrol; providing information to guests, visibility on the roads and law enforcement.

“Tourism monitors will be on standby to attend to areas such as swimming pools; however we would like to also take this opportunity to warn the parents not to allow children to swim without elderly supervision at the pools in the Park to avoid drowning,” concluded Phaahla.

Visitors should also take note of the following important information:

Day Visitor pre-bookings are subject to a non-refundable booking fee of R46 per adult and R23 per child.
Day Visitors who have pre-booked will still be required to pay Conservation Fees or use a valid Wild Card to enter the Park. The Conservation Fee for SA residents as well as Zimbabwe and Mocambique nationals (passport required to prove this) is R100 per adult and R50 per child (between ages 2 – 11). For nationals of Eswatini (previously Swaziland) and other SADC countries, the conservation fees are R200 per adult and R100 per child. For all other guests, the standard conservation fees of R400 for adults and R200 for children applies.
