Large Lion Prides

Post by JoeKing »

Of late i haven't really heard or seen any really large lion prides, biggest i saw since visiting knp was 17(incl cubs and 3 males) on the s36 near Ngwayeni water hole in 2008.

Since then nothing to write home about.

A few months ago, there was a program on one of the Sky nature channels about a massive lion pride in the N'wanetsi & nearby concession area.
If I remember correctly, there are about 30 individuals of various ages and sexes in this pride.

Agreed, Joburg!

Haven't seen a big pride for a decade...

But it seems we have bad luck!

Decent \O

But what ever happened to the 30+ prides??

Is the singita (man eater) pride still as big as it was?

I would imagine that a huge lion pride is not an optimal size for survival.

This program on the N'wanetsi pride showed them having to hunt on a daily basis. Sometimes twice a night!
A zebra was polished off in a matter of hours with so many hungry lions.

I would imagine that in hard times, when game/prey is sparse, a pride of 30 will have a high mortality rate.

At the height of the civil war in Mozambique there were a few prides in the Sweni area (adjacent to and within the subsequently named after the grandiose-over-ostentatious Singita concession pride) that picked off many an unwary human being.
In the book "Nightstalk" by Bruce Aitken which was written prior to the building of the ostentatious Singita lodge the author describes the large pride of at times up to 32 (? will confirm) lions he tracked.

The number varied widely depending on game densities, etc.
