Community warned about possible escaped lion around Malalane
The wandering lion was seen near Malalane again and has not yet been captured. The public is reminded to be careful.

According to Mel Preddy, chairperson of the Malalane Community Police Forum (CPF), the lion was seen near Esselen’s Nursery on Monday April 6 in the evening, and has not been subsequently spotted.

“Please notify farm staff and residents that may be using the Opdraend road that they should take care, and immediately report any sightings,” Preddy said

The area of risk is likely from Magnesite to Malalane, between the Crocodile River and perhaps some distance south of the N4.

It may be attracted to domestic animals, in the absence of other prey. It is a large predator, and as such does pose a risk to humans.

Personnel from an agricultural support business near Extension 6 in Malalane reported seeing a lion in an open field near the premises on March 31 in the early morning.

“Residents have also contacted me and confirmed that they have heard lions roar from much closer than usual, and from an unusual direction,” said Preddy.

“MTPA has confirmed the reported presence of a young lion near Obaro in Malalane,” he continued. “It is now ready for a quick response, including tranquilisers and means of transporting it once darted.”

The visual description from those who saw the animal, along with the tracks found at the end of Rooibok Street, indicate at least one young male lion.

Should you spot the animal, please contact Malalane CPF urgently at 082-777-6076 or MTPA Gerrie Camacho (predator specialist) at 082-353-9097, and immediately also send a Google Maps location to the same number via WhatsApp. You may also contact your security company.

Paw prints have been found on two farms and the MTPA is searching for the lion.

A male lion was spotted on a farm near the former Cybele Forest Lodge on Sunday April 26. Malcolm Easton, owner of the farm, said he came across some paw prints on Monday.

He happened to have cameras in this area, and after asking the security company about it, they confirmed it was indeed a lion. The cameras are not originally set up to detect animals, but have since been updated.

Pieter du Preez, a farmer south of the Da Gama Dam, also found some paw prints on his farm, but this was last week Tuesday.

Dr Ferreira du Plessis, from the MTPA, said they first became aware of the lion last week Thursday. He said all reports at this stage point to it being only one lion.

He said a team of MTPA rangers are out and about looking for the lion.

The first priority will be to dart the lion when it is found. Different situations require different solutions and Du Plessis said there are many factors. Two main factors would be the nature of the terrain where the lion is found, and also its behaviour.

If the lion is captured, it will then be taken to a facility where it will be kept for a minimum of two weeks. Du Plessis said this is to “neutralise the lion’s GPS” and to examine him. During this time they can then decide what would be best for the lion; to go to the Kruger National Park or perhaps another reserve.

If anyone spots the lion, they can contact Du Plessis on 082-901-3172

Seven lions on the loose after escaping from Limpopo game park
12 May 2020 - 15:48
BY NALEDI SHANGE

Limpopo police on Tuesday cautioned community members of Alldays, near Louis Trichardt, to be "extra careful" after a pride of lions escaped from a local game park.

Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said seven lions - five males and two females - escaped from their cages at Ingogo Safaris' premises on Monday night.

“The lions were allegedly spotted by community members roaming the area opposite Speaker Park Phase 1 and 2, in Alldays policing area, this morning around 7,” said Mojapelo.

“The farm owner and the police have already summoned officials from Limpopo economic development, environment and tourism. They are on their way to the area.”

It was not immediately clear how the lions escaped.

A pride of seven lions from the Karoo National Park outside Beaufort West in the Western Cape was put down on Tuesday after two escapes in a 24-hour period.

In the first incident, in the early hours of Monday morning, three lions from the pride of seven escaped from the park’s northern boundary along the Nuweveld Mountain range onto private property, said Rey Thakhuli, SANParks’ acting head of communications.

They subsequently killed 10 sheep on the neighbouring farm.

“Rangers were immediately despatched and succeeded in chasing the animals back to the park. They then slept on the mountain in case the lions returned to the carcasses, which they did during the night,” Thakhuli said.

He said SANParks‘ predator management policy made provision for the control of damage-causing animals.

“In an attempt to deter human-predator conflict and conservation, a management decision was taken to react quickly and put down the entire pride.

Damage-causing animals
“Because of the very difficult mountainous terrain, rangers could not get close to the animals on foot. A helicopter was subsequently brought in to assist in putting down the two sub-adult males, three sub-adult females and two adult females.”

Thakhuli said the pride was considered a “damage-causing group of animals” who was concentrated in the high mountainous areas next to the northern boundary of the park, causing a serious risk to human life and livestock.

Park management was in constant contact with the property owner, who was kept up to date with proceedings, he added.

Obviously they did not secure the place where the lions had exited the park :-?
