Michel, i read Bruce Brydens book, a game ranger remembers, in which he also tells a story of killing animals for the king before the reed dance. so its been happening for ages.

Agreed, it's been happening for many years, but it's time "they" get with the times and realize that it's no longer the way :-? -O-

I don't know how it does fit in here, but they have been culling lions at Tembe for a long time.
For several reasons: Inbreeding is a problem and males are culled and replaced with other males from other populations. And there are too many, of the 4 lions introduced in 2002, there are now about 40, and they have had to cull a few along the way (mainly to protect the endangerd Suni population and to give the wild dogs some space too)

Here is an interesting report from a volonteer who expierienced this Link

I think this is the reason for the intensive lion monitoring they do at Tembe.

:-? I do however doubt that they kill lions for the king but it might be possible that culled lions end up in the royal ceremonies. I doubt it, though it might be true -O-

After the report Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife CEO Bandile Mkhize, who allegedly ordered the possibly illegal killing of the two lions, lashed out at his critics, accusing them of being nostalgic for the days of apartheid.

Mkhize needs to learn from SANParks that playing the race card doesn't work anymore, and is just a pathetic and obvious knee-jerk attempt to displace attention from maladministration.

The truth is that most Chiefs, or a King in this case, have a selfish approach to their rights to utilise wildlife, and conveniently attribute that to "tradition".

If they wish to acquire wild animals, they can buy them like everyone else. They have the money.

Ezemvelo are being held to ransom here, according to their own logic, but should have the guts to tell the traditional leaders to get lost!

Traditions can be adapted easily and realistically, in the spirit of harmony and foresight, in the 21st century. End of story.

The Race card doesn't work we know that, but they will still play it.

Its like they are trying to prove a pathetic point.
