Call to help stop marine poaching

Johannesburg - The custodians of South Africa's marine resources have asked holiday-makers to join the watchdog force against poaching during the festive season.

"More eyes and ears can be useful in our anti-poaching drive," the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) said in a statement on Friday.

"October to December has always been a period during which the highest number of poaching incidences are reported, or consignments of abalone and rock-lobsters confiscated by our officials and other law enforcement agencies.

"In October and November this year alone, 143 391 units of abalone, which was around 16 tons, were confiscated."

Anyone who notices suspicious fishing activities may call DAFF's Fisheries Tip-off line on 028-313-2703 or 028-312-2609, contact the nearest police station, phone the CrimeStop line on 08600-10111 or the police emergency number on 10111.
