Development Plans for Mountain Zebra

Post by Mel »

God put me on earth to accomplish a certain amount of things. Right now I'm so far behind that I'll never die.

So they introduce lions to increase the numbers of visitors, which results in them wanting to build more sh!t (which is now the M.O. of SANParks). Now I get it. 0*\

I understand what it might sound like Puff Addy, but the re-introduction of lions etc is part of a policy of re-introducing species that were endemic to an area. They don't take those decisions lightly and certainly don't do it just to attract more tourists. Lions couldn't be brought back into the park until they had secured a larger area - and that's a process that is still on-going with aims to try and purchase more surrounding land to increase the size of the park. They have also got things seriously wrong in the past with regards to predator numbers... at one stage I think they had close to 30 cheetah and as a result certain species (e.g. kudu) were decimated. Tourists love to see cheetah and if their aims were purely to increase visitor numbers they would leave them there, but instead they moved most of the cheetah out so that they are now at more sensible numbers that the park can sustain. Unfortunately that means that sightings of them are quite sporadic now.

Managing an ecosystem is obviously a very difficult job - one I know I would find difficult - but I know from chatting to the staff there that that's their main aim. Probably the biggest reason for the increase in visitor numbers is that it is now recognised to be a very well-run park \O
