The response from SP:

SANParks update on Lake Panic:
Dear Krugerholics, regarding the low water level at Lake Panic; a drain valve became faulty and maintenance had to be done. Technical Services is attending to the problem.

This is not good enough. How long does it take to notice the dam is emptying...I suppose when the Golf Club Dam below begins overflowing? O**

Not only does waterlife die, but Lake Panic is the emergency water for Skukuza, and we are entering dry season. The water is pollution-free so very important! :X: 0=

The outlet valve/tap was leaking, and a replacement not available. So it had to be removed for repair and a controlled release allowed. It should begin filling up again now. O-/

These dams silt up, Dingwe...I reckon most of the water is nearer the wall? Okie is a farmer! ..0..

From a 2012 Blutuna Report:

Lake Panic, one of the most beautiful places in the park.

I got there early in order to get the best seat in the hide before the bazooka-boys arrived. I needent have worried as it clouded over and none of them bothered.

First up was a crimson Dragonfly

Image

and plenty of noise from one of the Grey Heron chicks

Image

A pied Kingfisher decided to have a bath and of course I didn't have the camera on quite the right settings so the pics are a bit blurred. I still like them though.

Image

People were coming and going and after a short period of solitude I was joined by two ladies. I almost choked when one said "That bird's got webbed feet. I wonder what kind of duck that is".

Image

A gyppo flyby - these are great, you can hear them coming long before you see them :-)

Image

The jewel of LP stopped by for a few seconds

Image

and by sheer luck (it's impossible to anticipate when these are going to fly) I managed this shot. A bit blurred but I don't care

Image

Then I spotted a Golly on approach......

Image

landing gear coming down......

Image

flaps and slats deployed.....

Image

prepare for touch down......

Image

reverse thrust and Brrrrrrrrrrrrraaaaakes. Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing.

Image

A Grey Heron flypast showing the top of its wings

Image

and a Greenbacked Heron

Image

a female Thickbilled Weaver

Image

and a Grey Heron launch.

Image

These two Goliath Herons were on their way to a punk-music revival
