While investigating the murder of Lt Col Leroy Bruwer, the Hawks have come across three suspects who have outstanding cases of poaching against them.

Bruwer (49) was shot and killed on his way to work along the R36 between Mbombela and Sabie on March 17 last year.

During their investigation of the Bruwer case, the Hawks found that Elliot Sindane (69), Elvis Mlimi (50) and Mabuthi Khoza (35) were implicated on charges of illegal hunting, illegal possession of firearms and illegal rhino horn dealings over a decade ago.
According to a press release by the Hawks, these cases were dismissed “under dubious circumstances”.

Now, the Hawks have reopened the cases against them and presented it to the NPA.

The three appeared in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on April 6. The case was postponed to May 17 in order for them to retain legal representation.

Capt Lloyd Ramovha of the Hawks confirmed that the three suspects are still persons of interest in the Bruwer case.

The only person charged thus far for Bruwer’s murder, Sinovuyo Salela (28), is still in custody awaiting his court date in July, after having been denied bail.

Mlimi is also one of the co-accused with “Big Joe” in a case of kidnapping and murder to be heard in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on April 12.

I wonder how many cases "disappear" under the piles.

I am happy to hear that somebody is working properly. It has become rare especially in the police forces, but maybe the Hawks are better or they are working better when it is one of their own -O- I am so tired of seeing people getting away with murder and rape

The trial of the man accused of the 2020 murder of Lt Col Leroy Bruwer has been postponed to July 6. Sinovuyo Salela (30) appeared briefly in the Mpumalanga High Court on Wednesday June 8 for what was supposed to be the start of his trial, however, the matter was postponed.

Salela is accused of the murder of Lt Col Leroy Bruwer, who was shot on his way to work on March 17, 2020. Bruwer was a member of the Hawks. He specialised in serious organised crimes such as poaching and cash-in-transit heists. In 2016 he was awarded the elite unit’s detective of the year award. During his career, Bruwer arrested various high-profile criminals.
