Anysberg Nature reserve

Post by okie »

My SO and I ( that is Okie-dokie and I ) decided to take a few days off for the weekend of my birthday , which of course was this last weekend .

We only wanted a couple of days , and as such did not want to travel very far .
Now , I do love the Karoo , and for choice , the nearest National Park is Tankwa . But.... Tankwa was booked out , so we decided to try out one of Cape Nature's parks -- Anysberg Nature Reserve .

The reserve is not so very big , only about 65 000 ha , but , less than 200 kilometres away from Worcester -- well , that makes for a quick and easy trip .

Left the farm on Saturday afternoon , just before 1.00 pm , travelled the long way round , via Montagu , Barrydale , then nearerer to Ladismith , took a dirt road to the reserve .
The written bumph about the park states that if you were to arrive after 4 pm , then you should call the park office to find out about keys , etc .
Arrived at a closed gate at 3 minutes before 4 o'clock . What to do ? Luckily , very luckily , found we had a cell phone signal of about half a bar . called the office -- big sign on the gate with the number , park managers number , and some other info which we did not bother about too much , except that it said the office was 24 kilometres away .
No answer on the phone .
Yechhh , what to do 0*\ Its Saturday afternoon , and we've missed them

Oh well , after some fiddling with the gate , found that it was not locked , opened it , drove through , and off we went .

Road was quite rough . Sort of a tamish 4x4 route , could mange speeds of up to 60 on good level patches. ( Lucky to be in a Landy O/\ ) .

Eventually arrived at the office -- it was closed , no signs on it , nothing to tells us " hi guys , expecting you , go to so and so , etc " .

This place have a number of cottages , all different names , like Gecko , Agama , etc . You know, all reptiles , especially of the Karoo . Ours was Seps -- which is a type of a lizard Tetradactylus tetradactylus ( very original name and surname O:V ) , but we won't go into too much detail about it at this stage - I never saw one , in any event .

So , we went looking for Seps - the cottage .

Aahhh , delightful ^Q^ Restful \O Sat down , on the little stoep , and had a X#X

This is the view in front of us -- looking right down the long valley , and there , in the far distance , a mountain peak .
Hmmm.... that's about 80 - 90 kilometres away - and is the mountain peak that looms and towers over Ladismith .

This shot is a bit hazy , but after a couple of hours , with the setting sun last rays on it , and zooming in a bit , here it is again :

Beautiful ? No wonder they call it Towerkop - meaning Magic-head O:V Yeahhh , magic , isn't it :-)

RP & FB - yeahhh , we are quite laid-back here :O^

We found the keys for the cottage in the door , so we just unpacked and settled in . A couple hours later , a guy pitched up , I think he is ranger or something . Well , asked us if we are settled in , comfortable , etc . We asked him a few questions , like , where is the office staff - Hmmm, they don't work weekends , so not to worry , all the paper work is OK at the office , enjoy yourself , big smile , and off he went :-) We never saw anyone coming near us again for the rest of our stay , and even on Monday morning , we just left , key in the door , and we took the road/track O**

More later with some pics .

Anysberg is typical Klein Karoo , fynbos , succulents , dry plains , surrounded by mountains . So , it allows for a lot of activities for lovers of nature and outdoors . You can hike , hike , hike , bring your bike , swim in mountain pools ( you do not really have streams in the Karoo , but many of the kloofs into the mountains have clear pools where you can swim during your hike , hike , hike . If you like hiking , of course .
There is also a big cement farm dam for you to swim in , with a pool deck built onto it .
You can do horse-riding - the reserve have about 12 or 15 horses .
You can also watch game - Gemsbok , Kudu , springbok , eland , grey rhebuck , klipspringer , Cape mountain zebra , red hartebeest , Cape grysbok , caracal , bat-eared fox , black-backed jackal , and of course boons ( hi RP 0/* ) .
Oh yes , and birds .....

Here a pic of our cottage :

Image

This is total off-the-grid accommodation , with LED lights supplied by solar PV panels and a bank of deep-cycle 6 volt batteries with charger and inverter .
This cottage consists of two rooms - a bedroom with a double bed and a single bed . Furniture in the main room consist of a couch , breakfast table and chairs , a welcome-dover wood/coal stove , a two-plate gas stove , refrigerator ( electric ) , and a gas instant hotwater system .

Nice stoep with a brick braai , from where you can sit and do nothing :O^ .
