The image in the OP is not a typical back-lit image.

The sun is slightly behind and to the right of the photographer. Look at the shadow under the car behind the lion.

The shadow is caused by the headlights of another car.

In other words, the animals are front-lit (although obviously there is not a lot of it).

Basically, this type of shot is almost impossible to plan.

Not really backlight... just a rather contrasty situation of patches of sunlit lion vs parts in the shade. Thankfully most of the face was well lit so it didn’t need much post-processing
